Kowloon Type

Hong Kong-based type foundry, Kowloon Type, is dedicated to refining the reading experience of East Asian culture through typeface design. Nippon Design Center worked on the website renewal to translate their philosophy into digital media.

Crafting exquisite typefaces and achieving well-balanced typesettings are both particularly challenging in East Asian languages, including those of Hong Kong, due to their numerous characters and complex forms. Additionally, typefaces are not fully recognized for their crucial role in enhancing communication.

The core idea of our website lies in making typefaces more approachable. We placed the menu at the center of the page and split the screen horizontally, evoking the experience of reading a physical book rather than a digital interface. To further showcase the breathing vitality of typefaces in everyday life, we adopted movies that capture scenes of Kowloon Type’s typeface in use and document the production process, alongside playful screensavers that offer a fresh perspective.
