Potato Shochu “Hokkaido Kiyosato”

Hokkaido’s Rich Culture, Distilled

At 44° North latitude at the foot of the Shiretoko mountains in the town of Kiyosato, Hokkaido, is the only shochu brewery in Japan operated by a local government. In 1975, Japan’s first white potato shochu (a distilled liquor) was created by the inhabitants of this town. In 2014 the concept and design for Hokkaido Kiyosato potato shochu was refreshed to promote Kiyosato as a culturally rich agricultural town to people around the world. This project values human connection and is developed through discussion with the townspeople so that their hometown pride will develop in tandem with the product.

Visual Identity

To increase awareness of Kiyosato, the shochu is named simply after the town. The trademark features three circular shapes representing nature, agriculture, and people, the three resources of the town that are the foundation of Kiyosato’s rich culture.

In addition to the logo and bottle, we also designed single and 3-bottle boxes, a wooden box for the high-end line, the label for the large bottle (sold locally), tasting samples, and a cardboard box for delivery. We were also charged with directing communication tools such as airport billboards, pamphlets, in-store promotions, business cards, envelopes, and letterhead.
