New Possibilities for Cardboard Boxes in an Era of 200 Billion Home Delivery Units

More and more, cardboard boxes accumulate in the nooks and crannies of our homes. Our new form of cardboard box is specially designed for an exponentially growing number of deliveries in the future.

Halving cardboard size

The “1/2 Cardboard Box” is a triangular delivery box, made compact by halving the size of a rectangular piece. The unique shape improves spatial efficiency for both truck delivery and home storage and reduces the difficulty of folding for disposal. These changes to the standard shape have unveiled new possibilities for corrugated cardboard, from greater storage ease to sleeker box appearances.

Carrying 260 billion Packages

In today’s world, home deliveries continue to increase at a remarkable rate. Home delivery services have become a fixture in our daily lives, brought on by expanded e-commerce markets and online shopping platforms and bolstered by significant time spent at home during the covid-19 pandemic. These delivery services are moving forward with great momentum, and by 2026, as many as 260 billion packages are expected to be distributed worldwide annually. Of these, Japan is projected to receive the most packages, at 72 billion per year. Many small and medium-sized companies and start-ups are tackling logistics issues differently than major corporations. This has prompted us to rethink the state of logistics from the perspective of Japan, a major country in home delivery services.

Doubling the Loading Efficiency of One Truck

If two boxes could fit in the same space as one rectangular box, the amount of cargo loaded on a truck could be doubled. From this, the idea for the 1/2 Cardboard Box was born. With the rapid increase in small-lot deliveries, the logistics industry is becoming increasingly characterized by a shortage of drivers and long working hours. Truck loading efficiency has reportedly dropped by as much as 40%. In an era when small-lot deliveries are the norm, a large number of small items are being transported one by one. Therefore, we have halved the sizes of conventional cardboard boxes. Cutting boxes diagonally instead of vertically allows for a wider center and a triangular shape, rather than a rectangular one. Although a small difference, this makes it easier to accommodate a variety of contents at half the size.

Smaller Size Suitable for AI Robot Delivery

AI robot delivery is likely to be employed in the future, both to help with the driver shortage — induced by a declining birthrate and aging population — and to enhance last mile delivery service to residential areas, buildings, and remote islands, which cannot be covered by trucks. Increasingly, these robots are being introduced on an experimental basis in Japan and abroad, but most can only load a few boxes. However, the ability to load two triangular boxes in the same space as one rectangular box would greatly increase the maximum carrying capacity. Thus, the “1/2 Cardboard Box” will contribute to the improvement of loading efficiency in this new age of AI robot delivery.

Increasing the loading efficiency of drones and automated delivery robots may help reduce future robot traffic on roads and in the sky.

Rounder Shape, Better Delivery

From watermelons to balls, dishes to lunch boxes and flowerpots, many round and spherical objects are well-suited to being carried in triangular cardboard boxes. Round objects are held firmly in place at three points on the sides, limiting their excessive movement while also reducing the amount of packaging material required. Additionally, this triangular structure disperses force in such a way that its shape is unlikely to change, and it is particularly durable against impact to the top. This is a great way to pack a disaster prevention kit without exceeding storage space. Try out this unique triangular shape for storing your own items.

A Mechanism to Reduce the Difficulty of Folding

Everyone has experienced the difficulty of folding cardboard boxes, which tend to stubbornly pop out of their folded shapes and assume new obstructive forms. But our box has eliminated much of this hassle. Triangles are less thick than squares when folded and can be done so into a relatively flat shape. We have also developed a unique locking mechanism. By folding tabs into slits in the flap, boxes can be locked in a folded state without needing strings, allowing for practical stocking without excessive volume.

From Oppressive Presence to Quiet Modesty

With just the elimination of a single corner, cardboard boxes become a much fresher presence in any room. Unlike the traditional oppressive presence of storage boxes, the “1/2 Cardboard Box” fits gently into the four corners of a room or storage space. The way it nestles itself at the edges gives an unprecedented sense of modesty. Stocked items and excessive inventory no longer need to be tucked away in the back of a storage room. Instead, they can be placed in triangular boxes in the corners of rooms, allowing for much more pleasant management of items.
