The Blend of Nikka

A New Wave in Western Spirits Design

Nikka Whisky, a western spirits maker whose predecessor was Dai Nippon Fruit Juice Co., Ltd. founded in Yoichi, Hokkaido in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, known as “the father of Japanese whisky.” Our package design relationship began with the label design for “Nikka Cider” released in 1986, and expanded to include whisky, brandy, and other major products.

Among these, “The Blend of Nikka” was a central product in the brand strategy and became a defining work that determined the direction of subsequent Nikka package designs.

We designed a rustic, thick-walled bottle with a minimalist label that emphasized the visibility of the whisky inside. This expression created a new trend in western spirits design that continues to influence the industry today.

NDC handled the “Nikka shield” label design on the Nikka Whiskey packaging, followed by all of Nikka’s major products from, whiskey to brandy. Of these, The Blend of Nikka was a core product in the brand strategy, and the simple label on the simple yet substantial bottle created a trend in foreign liquor design.
