The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama Posters

Breaking the Mold of Museum Posters

The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama (opened in 1981) was the predecessor to the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design established in 2017, and boasted one of Japan’s finest collections of 20th century art.

While most museum posters merely added exhibition details to artwork images, this project demanded something different — posters instantly recognizable as Toyama’s among countless other museums.

The 249 exhibition posters created during the museum’s 36-year history established a cohesive brand identity through the consistent use of a single designer throughout its existence.

These posters have continued to be used for over thirty years since the museum’s opening in 1981 to announce museum exhibits. Breaking with the pattern of filling in exhibit date and time on a museum poster featuring a work from the exhibit, NDC built a consistent brand identity for the museum by continually using the same artist.
