SUWARI
Chairs Made for Japanese Spaces

SUWARI is a chair lineup collaboratively developed by Hida Sangyo and designer Kenya Hara, designed to fit comfortably within Japanese spaces. The name “SUWARI” itself means “sitting.”
Japanese spaces — whether traditional rooms or contemporary architecture — are composed of vertical and horizontal rhythms. When chairs with free-flowing curves or substantial volume are placed in these settings, spaces tend to feel constrained.
SUWARI keeps structural elements to a minimum, emphasizing vertical flow with a deliberately slender design. This approach allows the chairs to blend seamlessly with both traditional Japanese and modern architectural spaces, creating a refined presence. With a leg structure that minimizes impact on wood, tatami, or carpet floors, this furniture transforms the act of sitting into a comfortable, visually pleasing experience.
