National Treasures Exhibition

A Collaboration Between National Treasures

For the 2014 “Japan National Treasures Exhibition: The Power of Prayer and Belief” at the Tokyo National Museum, we created a poster as the symbol art for the official shop “National Treasure Store.”

We wanted to make “national treasures”—typically unfamiliar to most people—more accessible by bringing them into everyday life through impactful expression. This was made possible through our creative concept: “unexpected collaborations between national treasures from different eras.”

The playful symbol art featured the Jomon Venus figurine riding atop the elephant from the Fugen Bosatsu statue—creating a whimsical connection between the Heian and Jomon periods. This distinctive pairing appeared on various merchandise including postcards, T-shirts, book covers, and tote bags.

NDC produced this poster to serve as emblem art for the official shop of the Tokyo National Museum. It shows the clay figure known as the “Jomon Venus” riding on the back of an elephant from the museum’s Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra). This humorous emblem art is featured on postcards, T-shirts, book covers, tote bags, and other museum goods.
