Hida Sangyo Co., Ltd.

Branding to Reflect Japanese Craftsmanship and Aesthetics

Hida Industries is one of the most known Japanese wooden furniture manufacturers, located in the Hida mountains in the Gifu prefecture. A unified art direction is applied to their corporate logo, tags, packaging, exhibition, and website in order to communicate their dedication to local, ecological product-making. I also directed its Milano Salone exhibition on “wood-bending and compression” (2018), as well as Japan House LA exhibition on Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics (2020).

Visual Identity

Logo

Hida Takayama has a woodworking culture that has lasted for over 1,300 years, and creations based on traditional skills and spirit thrives to this day. The logo symbolizes Hida Sangyo’s aspiration to “make the Hida region a mecca for woodworking with the heart and skills of master craftsmen” and strongly represents its regional roots. The “H” in “HIDA” represents kumiki (braided wood), “I” tachiki (standing wood), the “D” mageki (curved wood), and the strong legs of the “A” symbolizes dwelling and furniture.

Communication Tools

The business cards, catalogs, and the tags made in various sizes to afford items in all sizes and shapes, all carry the HIDA logo on a white background, providing a unified look and feel as a brand.

Storefront Design

At the Midtown Tokyo shop and exhibition, visitors can view and experience each Hida Industries product, created with unique wood-bending and compression technology, at ease. At Milano Salone 2018, the Hida Industries exhibited a booth to highlight this technology.

Exhibition Design

Japan House LA’s 2020 exhibition “HIDA: A Woodwork Tradition in the Making” illustrated Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics through the woodworking culture of Hida Sangyo and the Hida Takayama Region.
