The Art of Bloom

Awakening the Five Senses Through Human-Flower Symbiosis

We planned and produced an immersive interactive exhibition focusing on the special relationship between humans and flowers. The exhibition space comprises two areas themed around “SYMBIOSIS”: the Petal Room and the Augmented Nature Room.

Throughout history, humans have seen flowers as vessels that reflect deep psychological states — joy and sorrow, strength and fragility, life and death. However, modern society offers fewer opportunities to experience our essential connection with nature. Could we express and share this relationship in a new form? This exhibition was born from that question.

Through installations that fuse real flowers with digital elements and AR technology that visualizes natural phenomena, we employed various technologies to provide multisensory experiences beyond the visual. We created opportunities for visitors to connect with “nature” in unprecedented ways.

The Petal Room

The first installation, the Petal Room, consists of 3,500 real flowers, 6 million paper petals designed to fall in beautiful trajectories, a signature scent, and sensor-activated lighting that incorporates microscopic scans of flowers. These elements stimulate the senses and allow visitors to feel physically connected to flowers and nature.

The Augmented Nature Room

In the second installation, the Augmented Nature Room, AR technology creates an interactive experience that highlights elements of nature essential to both humans and flowers: Air, Water, Soil, Time, Light & Shadow, Space, and Wind.

Visual Identity

A theatre renovated for the purpose of this exhibition, merchandise, printed collateral, AR markers, and even a signature scent were designed under a unified visual direction. Inspiration was derived from the sakura (cherry blossom) flower petals that famously fall during the spring in Japan, along with the vibrant oranges, blues, and greens of the California landscape. We combined the two to encapsulate the universal awe that humans find in nature’s beauty.

Social Outreach

Visitors found their own unique ways of interacting with the exhibit, whether it be playiang with the petals, sitting down to reminisce, lying on the projection floor, or even dancing and doing yoga.  Workshops and satellite events with local collaborators added even more versatility to participants’ enjoyment of the installation. Visitors shared their experiences on social media, resulting in excellent organic traction.
