21st Century Rimpa Poster
Inheriting the Rimpa Spirit in the 21st Century

Tawaraya Sotatsu (16th-17th century), Ogata Korin (17th-18th century), and Sakai Hoitsu (18th-19th century) — artists from different periods who passed down techniques through devoted study, creating the distinctive Japanese art school “Rimpa.” This promotional poster announces the exhibition “21st Century Rimpa Posters: A Collaboration of 10 Graphic Designers,” celebrating the 400th anniversary of Rimpa’s birth
The exhibition explores Rimpa’s contemporary influence by showcasing works from 10 leading graphic designers, each inspired by this traditional aesthetic.
For our promotional poster, we captured Rimpa’s spiritual essence, honoring Japanese lyrical tradition through the image of a monkey advancing gracefully atop a wave crest.

The design shows the monkey from the Chinese zodiac travelling on the crest of a wave, presenting a calm appearance while also glorifying Japanese lyricism and the spirit which preserves the essence of the Rinpa School.
