Photographer Yoshihiko UedaÕs artistic work "Portrait" features the portraits of thirty-nine Japanese individuals that appeared serially in the monthly magazine, "A Book", which we art direct. One of our more impressionable staff members shed tears when she first saw his monochrome prints. They were so deep, rich, dark and exquisite. With four-color offset printing, it was impossible for us to reproduce their effect; there was a gap that was hard to bridge, but we tried as hard as we could to close it. As a result, the project led to the production of an innovative, fresh collection of photographs.
