This is the opening ceremony program for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games. In order to make it a medium by which people could remember the Games, we used a material with which we could reproduce the figurative image of "snow and ice". Practically speaking, we developed puffy paper which, when debossed, leaves dimpled areas, including letters and illustrations, that are semi-transparent, like footprints in new-fallen snow. In the program text, individual parts of the ceremony are illustrated by graphics based on the Japanese traditions. And the typesetting is distinct: vertical setting is designed for use with Japanese characters, and horizontal setting for English and French.
