Paper and Design

This project included an exhibition entitled "Paper and Design" held to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the paper producer Takeo Co., Ltd, as well as the design of the exhibition catalogue. Paper revealing a richness of texture and color is called "fine paper". The first such paper produced in Japan was "NT Rasha woolen cloth". Since its production in 1950, the history of JapanŐs fine paper has evolved from and been interwoven with a close relationship between the paper industry--led by Takeo--and graphic designers. Generally speaking, paper firms or manufacturers supply plenty of paper materials to graphic designers, who make full use of them by turning them into diverse communication tools such as books, calendars and so on. This is what lies behind the luxuriance of textures and colors that characterize Japanese paper. This exhibition has served to review the history of fine paper and designed products; the path that paper and design have traced side by side for the last fifty years.
