Scarecrow or water spout Scarecrow or water spout

For the exhibition, water, held as part of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, we portrayed a variety of aspects circulating water: water running through the cells at the micro level; water circulating inside the body; water flowing through the streets after having been used for various chores; the vast flow of water through mountains and rivers. A shishiodoshi, typically a water-filled bamboo tube that clacks against a stone when emptied, used as an aural scarecrow, gives rhythms to these circulations of water. In this piece, a glass mallet strikes a metal plate, creating sounds that cause the air--and the water--to vibrate. We made four kinds of glassware, with the shape and thickness of the mallet affecting the contours of both sound and water.
